What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the practice of penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles which are then activated through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner’s hands or with electrical stimulation.

The history of acupuncture has its roots in the ancient practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine: Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners believe the human body has more than 2,000 acupuncture points connected by pathways or meridians.

Our Treatment Approaches

The Acupuncturist may often use other modalities in combination with or individually to treat
specific conditions and ailments. These include:

Acupuncture is the practice of penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles which are then activated through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner’s hands or with electrical stimulation.

Physical pressure is applied (either with the fingers/hands or special tools) to strategic points in the body to stimulate energy and blood flow – much like the use of needles – however the skin is not pierced.

Special tools are used to scrape and stimulate specific areas of the body to improve circulation, break up scar tissue and promote healing.

Specialized cups are placed on the body and a vacuum chamber is created on specific areas of the body to separate muscles and fascia to promote blood flow and release toxins in areas of distress.

Far Infrared and Near Infrared frequencies are emitted in specifically targeted areas or in generalized areas to cover a larger area of the body.

Various types of specialized equipment that emit targeted electromagnetic energy (radio frequency or microwave radiation in specific frequencies, ultra sound and other)

Herbal and natural medicines have been used by healers for centuries. These herbal medicines are sourced from natural, plant based sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Guide to Acupuncture & Herbal Treatments

You are not alone! Many people have an intrinsic fear of needles. The idea of something sharp piercing your skin can be worrisome. That being said, there are other modalities that may be available for your specific condition. Discuss these issues with your care provider and she will suggest treatments that are best suited for your needs and situation.

YES!
There has been great deal of success in conditions specific to women from infertility to menstrual cramps and problems such as cosmetic conditions that are unique to women. With fertility issues in particular, herbal medications combined with acupuncture has shown very positive outcomes.

Absolutely. Acupuncture has been used to treat people of all ages from the very young to the elderly for centuries.

The list of known treatments and conditions is too long to mention here, but like any medical treatment, has limitations. Your care provider will be able to determine what forms, treatments and modalities are best for your specific needs and concerns.

Of course. Like any western medical treatment, there may be issues specific to your condition or unique situation and is the reason why your care provider will do a thorough assessment of your issues prior to any treatment.

This really depends on the individual. Most people will say that it doesn’t really “hurt”… but there can be discomfort when needles pierce the skin and are inserted into the body. Often people report a sensation sometime after the insertion of the needle, but this is a pressure-like sensation rather than a pain. Most acupuncture techniques utilize very small, thin and solid needles so the “prick”is extremely light and most people will say that there is little to no pain. That said, some techniques and some areas do cause pain when the needle is inserted. Your care provider will always provide explanations and details so that the patient is well informed prior to implementing any treatment.

Absolutely. In the hands of a professionally trained practitioner, Acupuncture is safe and free of negative side-effects. Many people have an intrinsic fear of needles and this is quite understandable. Bear in mind that in the case of unexpected pain from a needle that is inserted, simply removing the needle will eliminate the pain. Acupuncture points are very specific and centuries of studying mapping and learning have gone into the development of the practice. Board Certified Acupuncturists and Doctors of TCM are highly trained in rigorous programs – the average Doctor of TCM must study and train in accredited post secondary medical institutions for more than 7 years. Additionally, most jurisdictions require continuing education and learning in order to remain up to date and stay abreast of new techniques, research and findings.

The preparation is similar to any standard medical treatment. Please do come bathed and clean – not just for the sake of courtesy but as a measure of health and precaution. The acupuncturist will always clean and sterilize the bodily areas for treatment as well as the needles (which are individually packaged and sterilized and used only once then disposed of), it just makes sense to have clean skin any time you are expecting medical treatments that are done directly on your body.
